VIRGINIA WADE
WIMBLEDON LADIES TAKE A LOOK !!
CHAMPION
1977
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virginia was born on July 10th 1945,in Bournemouth,Hampshire,England.
She satisfied the British desire for romantic sporting heroines by winning
Wimbledon in 1977, the tournament's Centenary year,when she was watched by the Queen,
who was celebrating her Jubilee.
Prevviously she had had a love -hate relationship with Wimbledon,
usually failing to live up to the public's optimistic expectations.
She won all the major championships except the French before virtually retiring
in 1981,saying she would return to play 'just for fun'.Such was the nations interest
that even a change of hairstyle provoked columns of newsprint.
'Ginny'grew up in South Africa,where her father was Episcopal Archdeacon of Durban,
but at the age of 15 the family returned to England and she went on to graduate from
Sussex University in 1966 with a BSc in maths and physics.
She was ranked No 1 in Britain for a record 10 consecutive years and also holds the records
for the most number of appearances in the Wightman and Federation Cup teams.
Was one of only five women to earn a million dollars from tournament competition,she published her autobiography,
Courting Triumph,in 1978,the year after she was BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year.
In 1982 she began a new career as a BBC commentator.
